Festive Nights, Dandy Days

Navaratri – the nine nights that precede Dussehra, are a joyous and divine time with fasting and celebrating in equal measure. It’s the time to turn inwards for prayers, temple visits, self-cleansing through restricted sattvik diets, and also the time to turn outward and enjoy with abandon at the numerous dandiya events dotting the cityscape.

Until a few years ago, dandiya was virtually unheard of in the South. But with every passing year, it has become more and more entrenched in the cultural fabric of the city. Hotels, malls, apartment complexes and event venues are alive with the beats of the dhol and dancing in traditional regalia, along with feasting on Indian traditional and street foods from across the country that everyone loves. After the nine days of restrictions and revelry, comes the tenth day of Vijayadashami or Dussehra, which is celebrated with much pomp and grandeur.

Goddess Durga is worshipped as the embodiment of feminine shakti during Navaratri for vanquishing the demon king Mahishasur.

Dussehra also celebrates Lord Rama slaying Ravana for keeping Sita in captivity.

Both myths commemorate the victory of righteousness over evil.

Specially famous in the South is the Mysore Dasara – which is also declared as a State festival of Karnataka. The world famous Mysore palace illumination and the grand processions that are taken out on this day are a heritage legacy with legends and cultural richness infusing the festival. Navaratri with dandiya nights, Dussehra and Durga puja – all come with their unique festivities celebrated in different ways. Each is a manifestation of our inherent goodness to be harnessed and cherished.
