If you have been wondering lately about the additional signs at the traffic signal lights saying VAC or MNL – then know that these are part of the hi-tech smart signal system being introduced by Bengaluru Traffic Police across the city.

Unlike traditional traffic signals that operate on fixed timings, the new AI-based signals adapt to real-time traffic conditions, using AI cameras to analyse actual traffic data and accordingly adjust signal timings, thus improving the flow of traffic and reducing the wait time for vehicles.

VAC (Vehicle Actuated Control) mode uses cameras to count vehicles and adjust signal timings in real time. The system is responsive to changing traffic demands.

While MNL is the Manual mode where a traffic cop controls the signal based on traffic flow. This mode allows the traffic cop to override the system for emergencies like ambulances or VIP movements.

Bengaluru has around 40,000 traffic junctions, some of which are controlled by traffic signals and others managed by traffic police. With the new AI-powered Adaptive Traffic Signal Control System (ATCS), signals across multiple junctions will get synchronised, and adapt to the traffic situation at the current moment. Hopefully bringing some relief to our traffic woes.

Currently, these AI-powered signals are being monitored at certain key junctions. The state government plans to further install VAC at 136 more traffic signals by 2025 in a phased manner.

A smart move indeed for India’s original smart city.
