Saying ‘Tata’ to India’s ‘Ratan’

A glorious chapter in India’s industrial firmament has come to an end with the passing of the gentleman giant Ratan Tata.

Known and revered as much for his humility and charm as for his high office and shrewd business acumen, Ratan Tata was a tall figure amongst the captains of industry. He embodied the difficult art of being a refined mix of effective leadership along with his gentle, humane demeanour. He showed with his own example that one could be a strong and sharp leader without sacrificing gentility, humanity and humility. And therein lies his greatness.

Especially in today’s times where to pose, posture and project an alpha persona has become the norm, and is considered the only way to be when in a position of power, Ratan Tata broke the mould with his simple, down-to-earth and humane approach, never losing his sense of propriety and decorum. To the manner born, one can say. And yet from all one has read and heard, he was a tough businessman, a smart negotiator and did not cave in to external pressures if they went against his grain.

It’s a philosophy that has bound the Tata Group and percolates down from their highest echelons to the lowest ranks – to value integrity, inspire trust and win over loyalty of their customers, partners, employees and associates all around.

Ratan Tata lived up to his name of being a ‘ratan’ – a gem – amongst people, and under his long watch kept the Tata banner flying high keeping their core values intact at all times. Time to bid ‘tata’ to the man before the businessman.
