S.M. Krishna: A tribute

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, the 10th Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away earlier this month, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

A seasoned politician, statesman, and visionary, SM Krishna played a pivotal role in shaping Karnataka and transforming Bengaluru into an IT powerhouse. As Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, he laid the foundation for the city’s rise as a global tech hub.

SM Krishna’s interests extended beyond politics. He had a deep passion for arts, literature, music, and sports. An avid tennis player, he was also applauded for his sartorial sense, making him one of the best-dressed politicians of his time. His upbringing by a Gandhian father and education in the US shaped his unique blend of socialist and capitalist views, combining traditional and modern perspectives.

Known as ‘Ajathashatru’ for his diplomatic approach, SM Krishna’s political career was remarkable. He served in multiple roles, including as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister, Chief Minister, Union Minister, and Governor of Maharashtra. He was, at various times, a member of legislative bodies of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhana Sabha, and Vidhana Parishath.

A visionary, SM Krishna recognised the potential of information technology early on and played a crucial role in developing Bengaluru’s IT infrastructure. He also championed key infrastructure projects like Kempe Gowda International Airport and Namma Metro.

In 2023, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India.

SM Krishna’s contributions to Karnataka’s growth and India’s development will be remembered for generations to come. His legacy will live on.
