Palike Bazaar: Underground Shopping Opens

After six years in the making, South India’s first underground air-conditioned shopping market – Palike Bazaar – is finally ready and has been thrown open to the public in namma Bengaluru.

Named Sri Krishnadevaraya Palike Bazaar, after the 16th-century Vijayanagar emperor Krishnadevaraya, it spans 1,365 square metres housing 79 shops as of now, with space for more, offering a unique shopping experience in the heart of the city.

The Rs. 13-crore project was inaugurated on 25th August by our CM Siddaramaiah. Palike Bazaar has been modelled after the famed Palika Bazaar of New Delhi which is considered a shopping haven for locals there.

Located adjacent to the Vijayanagar metro station and bus stand, Palike Bazaar has been conceived as a high-tech marketplace built as a dedicated space for local vendors to tout their wares, and provide a comfortable shopping experience for customers.

Being underground, it is a weather-proof zone, safe from the vagaries of nature as well as manmade traffic hazards of street shopping across various vendor categories.

It’s a welcome move, clearing the streets of the vendors occupying pedestrian space, giving vendors a safe place to conduct their business, and letting shoppers browse and make their purchases in peace without jostling in unconducive environs.

Move over Delhi. Bengaluru’s Palike Bazaar is set to become iconic in its own right.
