Farewell Nightingale!
In the passing away of legendary singer S Janaki fondly
referred to as the Nightingale of South India and Ganna Kogile,
India has lost one of her gems. Belonging to the Golden Era
of Music which boasted of the Who’s Who of India’s greatest
singers like the Mangeshkar sisters, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh,
Yesudas, Hemant Kumar, Kishore Kumar to name just a
few, the prolific singer sang around 50,000 songs in her
illustrious career. She sang in multiple languages and she
recorded the maximum number of songs in Kannada and these
included solos and duets with such greats like Dr Rajkumar,
SP Balasubrahmanyam and PB Srinivas.

Hailing from Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, her
exceptional talent was noticed and nurtured at a very young
age. Then on, opportunities came her way and there was no
looking back. Her rise to fame was meteoric! During the course
of her musical journey, the songstress has been bestowed
with many awards – the National Award 4 times, many state
government awards and the Padma Bhushan in 2013 which
she declined. The melody queen loved Karnataka and chose to
spend her twilight years at Mysore where she breathed her last.
Janakiamma as she was also called may have left us but her
sweet voice still lingers! Adieu great one!

The Special Intensive Revision better known by its
acronym SIR, has created a wave of confusion across the state
and the country. From lack of clarity to lingual issues, the
public is finding it difficult to comprehend what exactly needs
to be done. Only a small fraction of the populace are believed
to have got things right with many complaining that things are
just not getting registered in their coconuts (read as brains) and
as a result they are going nuts!

It is just not the hoi polloi who are struggling, even the
Booth Level Officers better known as BLOs are struggling
to explain to voters what needs to be done. A majority of the
BLOs are overcome by fatigue as they have stiff production
targets to meet. Not surprisingly, the BLOs posted in areas
where there a large number of unlettered citizens have to put
up with a lot of challenges. More help desks and better planning
are the need of the hour! Hope things get sorted out soon and
all of us can heave a sigh of relief!
