Weather this Diwali

Akin to the relationship status proclaimed on many a Facebook page: ‘It’s complicated’ – Bangalore’s relationship with the weather gods also seems to be complicated.

You wake up to a cloudy haze with a fine drizzle that you can’t really see but you know it’s there because the ground is wet and the leaves are dripping.

But turn around to take care of your morning chores, and the next thing you know the sun is streaming in through the window in all its glory and the sky overhead is as clear and blue as a baby’s eye and all is bright and sunshiny with the world. Ah!

This beautiful sunlight lasts a few hours, lulling you into believing the weather is finally going to be good all day long.

But come afternoon, and the sky suddenly begins to darken again, and wait – is that thunder you hear in the distance?

You can’t be sure if it’s the clouds or the rowdy rumbling of omnipresent, omni-choking traffic. It’s both you realise, and the thunder is now accompanied with lightning flashes and by the time evening sets in, the clouds are back, this time darker and more sinister.

And then begins the rain which comes suddenly, forcefully, in great torrents till late night.

And so during the course of 24 hours, Bangalore perched atop the Deccan Plateau has been going through these extremes of sun and rain playing hide and seek all day, all month. It’s complicated.
