September Stream of Consciousness

As we bid goodbye to the beloved Ganesha with visarjans everywhere, it is heartening to see that people are increasingly becoming environment-conscious and more and more devotees are resorting to clay idols that can easily dissolve in water, sans the chemical paints. Percentage-wise the eco-smart populace may still be small, but with awareness setting in, slowly the wheels of change will gather moss and grow as they roll along.

Wheels rolling though reminds one of vehicles in general, which brings to mind the ubiquitous Bangalore traffic with no solution in sight. Much as we celebrate the launch of the Yellow Line –

which has been going packed from Day 1 – the crowd on the roads does not appear to have lessened.

Which makes the mind wander to that eternally-under-construction Ejipura flyover. As per latest reports, it is now slated to be completed by June 2026. One can only hope that one sees it operational in this lifetime. A whole generation of little children have become young adults since it first began to be built.

Yet children are often the drivers of change. They quickly absorb new-age concepts and embrace eco-awareness more naturally, often prompting the elders in their lives to modify their old ways – whether it is in embracing newer technology; or insisting on behavioural decency, kindness and equality towards the less-privileged; or rejecting polluting firecrackers; or indeed, ensuring that the Ganesha idols brought home were environmentally sustainable.
