Multi-pronged Month
March has emerged as the poster-boy of exemplary national integration.
Holi, Ramadan, Lent, and Ugadi all overlap this month, dove-tailing their multifarious celebrations, fasts, observances, and feasts into a beautiful bouquet of harmonious co-existence and mutual respect for others’ belief systems.
What a laudable and uniquely Indian societal achievement, if you stop to think about it for a minute. A wonderful manifestation of ‘Unity in Diversity’ that we grew up reading about in our school text books. The ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ saga played out on a country-wide scale.
Since most festival dates are based on lunar cycles, it looks like there is some divine celestial intervention here, conspiring to bring about this glorious intermingling of various man-made religious orders. A gentle reminder perhaps that the heavens did not differentiate, it was us who dreamt up our differences.
Philosophy aside though, there is much joy to be gleaned on these holy, and holi, celebrations, open to all. (See our Events page for some of the happenings around town).
Fast, feast, eat, pray, live. And let live.
