Just as Travel & Shop magazine has clocked in its 18 years of existence, Bengaluru city is commemorating the 516th Birth Anniversary of its revered Founder Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda.

Anniversaries and milestones bring into focus how the vision and will power of one man can create a haven where none exists.

Kempe Gowda I was a visionary Chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire, credited with being the Founder of Bengaluru. He envisioned the building of a well-planned fortified city at the junction of several trade routes, to serve as a centre for commerce and administration. The town would consist of a fort, temples, tanks, and cantonments, with eight access gates and wide roads.

He took the consent of the Vijayanagara Emperor Achyutharaya and constructed the Bangalore Fort and the city in 1537 AD. The settlement spread across present-day Avenue Road, Ulsoor, Yelahanka, K R Market and Malleswaram. Subsequently, he moved his base and capital from Yelahanka to his newly founded city, Bengaluru Pete. As the scion of the Morasu Gowda lineage, Kempe Gowda I proved to be an able and just ruler.
